Are Your Plans SMART?

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

January 2011, it’s a new year and a fresh start to make some productive business plans. However, planning and forming objectives are pointless and a waste of time if there is no thought behind them. This is where the concept of SMART takes its place. This basic but effective model can help you produce solid and useful plans and objectives to take you through 2011.

S – Specific: every aspect of your plan should be written with very fine detail so you know exactly what you are aiming for. A good way of checking this is by getting an unbiased person to read them and see if they know exactly what you want to achieve.

M – Measurable: each point in your plan must have a measurable characteristic. Without having anything to measure you cannot see if you are working towards your plan and hitting targets effectively.

A – Achievable: be true to yourself and plan accordingly. Start the New Year as you mean to go on so plan for what you can manage and reach. Aim high of course but not ridiculously so, as it will only reflect on you at the end of the year when you come to review your efforts.

R – Realistic: everything should be in place so that each objective and target can be reached. There is no use making targets when you do not have the relevant people and resources available. These are just dreams and will not become reality.

T – Timely: always include a time frame for achieving each target. This will not only motivate you but it will also help you keep track of your plans. These can always be adjusted as the year goes along but try and be as accurate as you can.

Using these simple steps will ensure that you always form precise business plans. Once your business plan and objectives are finalised you can think clearly about how your marketing and promotional activities will fit in. Make 2011 a good one!
